Scream at the Devil: Help Make a Movie!

Scream at the Devil movieI love movies; I don’t see enough of them lately.Future Kill, the movie with Giger cover art

My undergraduate degree was in movies, and if you check out the movie Future Kill, you’ll actually see me.

I was a production assistant, but I was an extra in one scene.  Here I am, in all my street-bum glory.

J. Kenner (Julie Beck) as an extra in Future KillSo my love of cinema just kicks into overdrive when I see that a friend is actually making a movie.

I mean, how cool is that?  (And not my neighbor with a video camera; we’re talking professionals, with years and years of Hollywood and live theater creds behind them.)

Loaded by Shari Shattuck

Specifically, my friend Shari Shattuck, who writes one of my absolute favorite series, The Callaway Wilde series that began with Loaded, is starring in it (she’s done a TON of movie and tv work).

Author and Actress Shari Shattuck

Here’s the info straight from Shari:

My husband Joseph Stachura, the acclaimed artistic director of the Knightsbridge theatre and two previous award winning films, will be directing the movie and it will star little ol’ me, Shari Shattuck (ON DEADLY GROUND, SPY HARD, DALLAS, blah blah, on and on.) and Eric Etebari (STAND UP GUYS, THE LINCOLN LAWYER, 2 FAST 2 FURIOUS) and some other really amazing people that I can’t wait to tell you about.

There is an amazing supporting cast and crew… our Academy Award winning Editor, Nancy Frazen and our VFX producer, Shannon Shea (MEN IN BLACK, JURASSIC PARK, PREDATOR) are only two of a remarkable team, all of them have joined on because they love the project!!

Very cool, eh?

Anyway, they have the funding to make the movie and are looking to raise money to make the movie even better.  As Shari says, ”

Though we already have the basic budget, to make this film as exceptional as we know it will be, we could use a little help from you!! You can contribute 5 dollars or 5000, or just get on board by signing up for the newsletter and watching the fun!!

If you’d like to be part of it, you can see the contribution page for Scream at the Devil here! There are all sorts of fun perks that go along with the contribution levels! I’m excited to see the movie and know I helped out just a little!

Have you ever been in or worked on a movie or a stage play?

P.S. - Book two of my Stark Trilogy -  Claim Me - debuted at number 2 on the New York Times bestseller list, and is now entering its fourth week on the  USA Today bestseller list! And Complete Me comes out July 30.  WOOT!

Wherein I gripe about being underwhelmed by what’s “coming soon” to a theater near me…

“Sadly, there aren’t that many movies hitting the screen that I’m excited about anymore. I’m not sure if it’s the state of Hollywood or the fact that I’m not 21 anymore (though just barely past that, of course). But I’ve been to a couple recently, and that means I’ve seen trailers. And most of the trailers don’t have me bouncing in my seat ready to hand over my money.”

Shout out for the weekend!

It’s Friday, I’m almost caught up with catching up, the girls have been rocking at their school work, and so we’re starting the weekend early!

So what’s on today’s agenda? First up, we’re going to do some tweaking to the script for a super-short, ultra low-budget movie (as in, if we break $50 I’ll be annoyed). It’s a project the girls are working on and we’re going to shoot it on the iPhone and cast neighborhood kids. World premiere coming this summer!

But it’s the next event on today’s agenda that the kids are really looking forward to, because we’re going to play hooky and go see Mirror, Mirror! I’m hoping there aren’t any scary scenes as Isabella’s still not quite down with the scary stuff (unlike her older sister who’s more than happy to whack zombies with her dad on the Wii). I’ll do a movie review this weekend; hopefully it’s a fun flick.

As for the rest of the weekend, I’ve got a speaking gig on Saturday, but other than that I’m going to revel in not having specific plans. Gonna do some cleaning, some gardening (if you saw my How Does Your Garden Grow post, you know that the yard needs it…though it’s coming along. At least it was until all this rain!), some writing, some playing with the kids.

And I’m also looking forward to seeing my buddy Stephen who’d coming into town. It’s been a couple of years, so I can’t wait to see him!

And, because it’s Friday and everyone needs a Friday funny, here’s a couple of movie trailer remixes that amuse me:

Harry Potter and the Brokeback Goblet

and my absolute favorite re-cut ever. The Shining redone as a heartwarming flick:

That’s me. What’s on your weekend agenda?

Whining about my sordid past…

Am I on the set of a movie...or panhandling?

I’m blogging about my sordid past over at the Whine Sisters today!

I’ve been doing a lot of rearranging in my garage these days, and in the process, I came across the picture to the left. That’s me back during my freshman year in college.

Lest you jump to the same conclusion as my poor, put upon father, let me explain:

I started out as a journalism major, but switched to film after I worked on a local production called Splatter, featuring some of the stars of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

I was working nights for the film, going to school in the morning, and doing my work-study job in the afternoons. I was averaging about 5 minutes sleep a night.

The basic premise was the frat boys versus the genetic mutants, and the movie was eventually released as Future Kill.

You can still rent it, and it has truly awesome poster art done by none other than Giger (think Aliens).

Love the cover!

Anyhoo, I saw an ad for auditions for cast members, and I went down and told them that what I really wanted was to be on the crew.

They “hired” me (as in let me work for free) but after a few weeks they actually put me on the payroll. I was a PA, a Production Assistant, and it was my job to do just about everything….
